The Black Sapphire Pirate Ship in Aberfeldie – we found treasure!

If you’ve got a son like ours who is obsessed with Jake & The Never Land Pirates, you will understand just how priceless this playground in Aberfeldie is.  We can literally get our 3-year-old to do anything – eat his veggies, clean up his bedroom, sit still whilst I cut his hair – when we negotiate a pirate episode (or two) as a reward.

This playground is incredible and designed for children between the ages of 3 to 7.  The quality and the workmanship are second to none.  It was commissioned by Moonee Valley Council and designed and built by Tom Coupe & his team at Blue Leaf CreationsBlue Leaf have created 5 pirate ships in total, the other 4 housed in lucky primary schools around Victoria.  Sitting alongside the banks of the Maribyrnong River at Riverside Park in Aberfeldie, the 12 x 5.4 metre ironbark ship took 4 months to make, with its official launch on the 15th of July 2014.  It sits on a giant sandpit and has a steering wheel, cannons, sails, telescopes, rigging, a bell, an anchor, a dedicated captain’s quarters, and a plank to walk for unfortunate captives.  It even has dual escape slides, a treasure map & treasure chest to find, and detailed silhouettes of mermaids, a monkey, sharks, & pirates for appreciation by young and old pirates alike.  What’s not to love?

We drove 40 minutes to get to Aberfeldie’s pirate playground from our house, but due to the unbridled joy that this family trip brought to our son, we’d do it again in a heartbeat.
