Mr Scruff’s is a new place in Collingwood renowned for its fresh line up of DJs, straightforward drinks list, and delicious – not to mention affordable – grub. We stopped by last month for lunch with the kids to try out their drink-friendly snacks & meals.

At the very front is the bar area where everyone goes to order their food & drinks. In the raised area past the bar is the restaurant come nightclub, and down the stairs at the back is the beer garden. The waiters are, understandably, very fit especially given they have to go up and down the stairs all day long to serve food from the kitchen. Strewn across the walls is street art by Conrad Bizjak. Mr Scruff’s has a really youthful vibe and we can only imagine how it transforms at night when the DJs hit the decks.

Mr Scruff’s was officially launched on the 12th of September 2014 but it doesn’t seem to have changed their amazing deals where locals can eat for half price on Wednesday from 6-10 pm, and anyone can get a 1kg bucket of chicken wings for $14 on Tuesdays.

Duck meatball skewers – drenched in honey, soy & ponzu glaze with sesame Kewpie mayo (gluten free) ($8)
These were amazing… so exquisitely tender and packed full of flavour.

Beer battered chips (for the vego’s) ($8)
Our son loved these.  They were piping hot, lovely and crispy, well seasoned, & served with a little aioli.

Mini croquetas – goats cheese & corn (for the vego’s) ($7)
These were amazing.  As you crunch into them, the gooey, spectacularly tasty, innards ooze out.  So good.

mr scruffs 1200-6
Pulled pork taco – with apple & celeriac slaw, pickled shallot & crackling (gluten free) ($6)
The pork was beautifully tender; the crackling was lovely and crunchy.  The apple & celeriac slaw worked wonderfully with the nice creamy dressing to help the taco slide on down.  So satisfying.

Soft shell crab taco – with capsicum & corn salsa, lettuce & chipotle aioli (gluten free) ($6)
This was delicious.  The soft shell crab was well seasoned and sat so eloquently atop the taco.

Confit lamb ribs – with green herb & smoked almond salsa (gluten free) ($9)
These were so incredibly oily but damn they were good!  Before serving, they had been deep fried which gave them that deliciously crisp texture.  When we bit into them, after the initial outer crunch, the meat within just tore apart… completely off the bone.  They were perfectly seasoned and left us wanting more.. a lot more.

mr scruffs 1200-4
Beef burger – with cheese, lettuce, Mr Scruff’s special sauce, pickles & onion ($9)
You can add an extra pattie for $2.  Definitely a decent burger for a place that does a lot more than just burgers and fries…

All in all, we had such a good time at Mr Scruff’s.  Our son loved the beer garden and our daughter loved rolling around on the couches.  Oh.. and the food.. it comes at a decent price and definitely fits under the category of bar food done right.  I’d love to return and try their Cubano toastie, poutine & salty pretzel!
