Meatballs & Sons is a unique restaurant / bar in the heart of Fitzroy which is actually quite large with an upstairs area and the ground floor set up like a British grocer.MEATBALL & SONS 1600-23

I must admit that I was not expecting much from the food but these were not your average meatballs – these were pretty special..

We took advantage of their lunch special where you could choose any slider, a side and homemade soda for $12.  They also had 3 ball bloomers for $10.  On top of that, we ordered a few more balls to share & of course, the obligatory sweet treat to end a fabulous meal.

Peppered calamari, apple Julienne, soy, coriander slider ($6)MEATBALL & SONS 1600-4This was amazing.  The calamari was so tender that if we hadn’t thought hard about what we had ordered, we could have easily mistaken it as a piece of white fish.  The bun was so tender and the delicious soy sauce melded so well with the entire dish.

Pork belly, braised cabbage, maple mustard slider ($6) MEATBALL & SONS 1600-5Delicious.  The pork was very tender and the mustard gave it a welcome kick.

Rose’s mint & fresh lemon AND ginger & mint beer sodas ($6 each)MEATBALL & SONS 1600-9Not something we would order again due to the fact that they were both sickeningly sweet with overbearing flavours.

Whipped potato mash ($4 side)MEATBALL & SONS 1600-24I kind of wanted to throw a hell of a lot more butter & salt in there and mash it up to a smoother consistency.

Green haricot beans, Persian feta, almonds ($5 side) MEATBALL & SONS 1600-8Unbelievably good.  I could have sat and eaten this all day.  I loved how the almonds were soft enough to poke a fork through them and the feta was present but not at all overbearing.

Thai chilli chicken, coriander & mint salad, soy chilli glace 3 ball bloomer ($10)MEATBALL & SONS 1600-6So darn good.  The bread was lovely and crusty and the meatballs.. wow.. the meatballs were tender and filled to the brim with amazing aromatic Thai flavours.  I would definitely come back for this.

Skewered bourbon-glazed pork balls, buttered corn cob ($16)MEATBALL & SONS 1600-10This just didn’t do it for me.  The pork meatballs just tasted like capsicum and were rather dry and disappointing.

Achiote Mexican beef balls, chipotle chilli sauce, soft shell tacos ($16) MEATBALL & SONS 1600-7Not only did these look amazing, they were to die for!  I loved the sweet chipotle chilli sauce and the flavour-packed meatballs.

Rickets Point ice cream cones, 3 flavours served in a rack ($12)MEATBALL & SONS 1600-13

MEATBALL & SONS 1600-12These were so cute.  We totally loved how the waffle cones were jazzed up with chocolate, nuts & coconut, and within the cones at the bottom were little orange jellies for the jaffa cone, coconut jellies for the cherry ripe cone, and salted caramel for the vanilla bean ice cream cone.  What a fabulous touch.

Mum’s home baked apple pie with a custard layer & cream ($9)MEATBALL & SONS 1600-14This came out lovely and warm and the custard really made it special.  It was delicate and soft.  Absolutely beautiful.

All in all, we had a fabulous time and I can kind of understand why there are so many meatball establishments popping up around Melbourne..
